Operation principle of composting toilet

All toilet waste, including paper, is directed into the cassette through the porcelain seat. A special double bottom inside the cassette separates solid waste from liquids, allowing composting to occur already during use.

Green Toilet is based on batch composting, which involves the use of replacement cassettes. When the in-use cassette is full, it is swapped out for a new one. The full cassette is covered and moved to an appropriate location for secondary composting, where it transforms into nutrient-rich soil (typically 6-18 months depending on conditions).

Green Toilet Lux Cassette Maintenance

When the Green Toilet Lux cassette is full, you can immediately replace it with an empty replacement cassette and leave the full cassette outdoors for composting. This way, toilet maintenance is always easy, quick, and clean. If the dry toilet is used by multiple users and/or in year-round conditions, it may be a good idea to have several replacement cassettes on hand. Alternatively, you can empty the full cassette into a separate compost bin designed for toilet waste, eliminating the need for replacement cassettes.

Required Clearance Under the Bathroom

Green Toilet Lux offers various composting options for different space constraints. Typically, the choice is guided by the clearance height beneath the bathroom floor. The table below lists the required minimum clearance height for maintenance. Ideally, the toilet should be located near an exterior wall for easy access to the composter.

Also, you should  choose the largest possible composter that you can fit, as composting process is always better when there is plenty of composting mass inside.

Green Toilet Lux Cassette Basic Package Includes

• Green Toilet cassette composter with double base (120 or 150 liters)
• Porcelain pedestal with a seat and a lid, non-separating or urine diverting
• Electrical duct fan (three-speed)
• Ventilation pipes 3 x 100 cm, 2 x 50 cm flexible pipes (with brackets and ventilation pipe cap)
• Waste chute, 20 cm in diameter, 50 cm long (can be longer/shorter if needed)
• Bag of dry cover material
• Canister with liquid hose 150 cm

Maintenance

During use, add dry cover material to the Green Toilet Lux after each use (approximately 1-2 dl) or as a separate maintenance procedure (approximately 5-10 liters) every 1-2 weeks.

When the composting tank is full, replace it with an empty replacement cassette. The full composter can then be left to compost in peace. Alternatively, you can empty the full cassette into a separate compost bin designed for toilet waste, eliminating the need for replacement cassettes.

Options and Accessories

In off-grid locations, the electric fan can be replaced with a wind-powered fan.

Can the Green Toilet compost container be in a cold space beneath the floor during the winter?

– Yes, it can. In freezing conditions, the composting process halts but resumes once the compost thaws in the spring. Freezing of the compost container does not affect the operation of the Green Toilet Lux dry toilet in winter. However, it’s a good idea to prepare for potential freezing of the liquid hose with a self-regulating heating cable and an extra urine canister.

Is there a risk for odor problems inside the house?

No, as long as the ventilation is installed properly. Whenever there is electricity available, we recommend to use the electrical duct fan to ensure proper ventilation. Other methods of ventilation are more prone to changes in the weather.

The basic use of the Green Toilet Lux is similar to the the other versions of the Green Toilet Lux. Thus the normal manual applies to all versions but there is a special assembly leaflet for the cassette version as well.
